Yep you guessed it – We had a birthday to celebrate in my house at the end of last week. So on Friday, whilst my children were at school I set about baking a cake to decorate for my son’s birthday. Even though I went to the supermarket first with my husband I decided that I could make something better than the cakes available in the supermarket and used my time in the supermarket to buy what I needed to decorate his cake.

When I got home, the first thing I did was to prepare a chocolate cake batter, divide it between two cake tins and bake it. The cake had to be chocolate as it is his favourite flavour and believe me when I say I have had some strange flavours to make for my children over the years. One year, I had to make a olive and pesto cake for one of my daughters. Needless to say, it wasn’t a cake which was shared with her friends and family but was eaten by her only. Anyway, I digress, back to my son’s cake which was baked to perfection and left to cool whilst I made the filling. I needed to fill the cake with a nice thick layer of the chocolate fudge sauce but make sure there was plenty left for the decoration too. After sandwiching the sponge layers together, I covered the whole cake in the fudge sauce and then set about decorating it.

For the decoration, I knew I wanted to use all his favourite sweets but just how I was going to do that I didn’t really know. The Kit Kats gave me the answer as I knew he loved them so I surrounded the outside of the cake with the Kit Kats to form a border to the cake but then I went one step further and divided the top into sections which I then filled with some of his favourite sweets ranging from

  • Freddos
  • Jelly Snakes
  • Maltesers
  • Milky Way Stars
  • Chocolate Buttons
  • Haribos
  • M&Ms.

It looked brilliant and all I had to do was leave it to set in the fridge ready for tea time. The cake proved a big hit with my son and the rest of the family as well as, the neighbours who were invited in. It will be a style of cake which I make again as it is so easy to do and is a type of cake I have seen many times on Pinterest sites.

The cake I have in mind for his party with his friends which is happening next weekend is going to be slightly more difficult to bake and construct but my husband has had some good ideas which I am going to try out next week. I am really looking forward to making this cake and for this reason I am not adding a Friday Treat to my Facebook page this week so that I can concentrate on this cake. (Also, need to find time to get some other jobs out of the way which have been neglected recently).
