Whenever it comes to a Sunday afternoon where I am stuck in the house just relaxing the children always seem to want to bake. Today is no exception. Homework is complete, school uniform is washed and ironed, school shoes are polished. Now it is time for the children to have some fun. Hands are washed and dried and whilst they finished their homework I collected the ingredients which they could use up. One child is making her favourite brownies but with a Christmas twist. One child is making fudge with me, as we are changing our plans for teachers presents this year and hopefully going down the home made fudge route. The youngest daughter wants to make Jam tarts and my son wants to make a Blaze from Blaze and the Monster Machines. All different ideas which have to be fulfilled, so the kitchen is going to be warm today. I don’t mind really, as at the end of the day, I love baking and the children love eating whatever we bake so it is a win-win situation.

Christmas Tree Brownies
Christmas Tree Brownies

The first bake we have completed is the Christmas tree brownies which look very pretty and are really easy to make. The brownie recipe I used is my standard recipe but when it is baked the fun begins. I showed my daughter how to cut them into triangle shapes before she iced them with green candy melts and decorated them with sprinkles. Then she snapped some candy canes up to make the trunks of the tree. Quite effective even though I say it myself. I made these regularly at Christmas time for the market.</p

Viennese Whirls
Viennese Whirls

I had a cat nap yesterday and dreamt that I made some Viennese Whirls , which I haven’t made for some time. So today I carried out my dream and made some filled with jam and some dipped in chocolate. The children have devoured them and here was I thinking they wouldn’t like them and they would be left for my husband. 🙂 I filled these biscuits with jam only but they can be filled with buttercream and jam if wanted. Another alternative filling would be chocolate buttercream or even coffee flavoured buttercream. Now I am going to have to make them again and try the coffee idea as I know my children will not eat them then. This recipe is going to be added to Pinterest and to my recipe book. A definite recipe to try. I will let you know how the coffee flavoured Viennese Whirls  turn out later.
